Tinley, Thank you for your work on the Faciat Georgius medal. I have learned a lot from you - and there is Not a lot of info out there on this one, as you well know!   I believe now as well that there are two types, the first type is smaller than the second 'strike,' and also that Marines who had 'been there' somehow purchased examples these through the decades. Also, that there have been many fakes.    I hope your research is progressing - there are some like who truly appreciate you attempts.   John

I have no financial interest or favor for giving you a name, but I've used Geoff,  owner of Golden Arrow Research on a few occasions, most recently about 7 years ago to get my ancestor's  naval OPF 1912-21 from NARA in St. Louis,  coincidentally whose M1872 sword and engraved pocket watch I own, similar to your situation.   Congrats on having a tremendous, historic,  family heirloom group.  For the same price as NARA (at least it was 5 years ago),  from Golden Arrow you'll get high resolution color scans of the COMPLETE file, every page in it, rather than crumby Xerox copies where you very likely won't get every page copied, particularly if it requires unfolding or copying a back, since the concept of customer service at NARA is spotty at best.    Geoff also gives a discount to USMF members.  Good luck     https://www.goldenarrowresearch.com/

I was not aware that these existed. Pretty interesting piece of history! Thank you for sharing!

Believe it or not when they are seen worn with a flight suit, you often see them worn UNDER the flight suit. Wearing it under the flight suit protected it from oil and grease.  Easier to replace a flight suit than a leather flight jacket.  Also the WWII USN flight jacket you refer to was the M-422A,  A G-1 was a post war Navy flight jacket.   This image is from a thread from another Forum, just posted today.

If you look at some of the past threads where we posted examples of the (ca pre-1924) Link and 1925 AMCRAFT catalog, the actual catalog numbers on the 1942 Gemsco catalog match up.   For example, the small wings match exactly as with some of the Naval Aviator wings. One could imagine some variation in catalog/stock numbering, but the similarities are pretty similar.  Also, the wings from the earlier categories were offered in various finishes (silver, gilt, with enamel, rhodium, etc).    I suspect that GEMSCO was just acting as a retail seller and had these items in its catalog, to the extent that it used similar stock numbers as AMCRAFT did.   If someone had some time and better scans, they could probably match up many items with their catalog stock numbers from the two companies (I think some more contemporary catalogs from other pilot supply companies from the 40's show the same AMCRAFT wings with similar catalog numbers).  I think that the photographic evidence for the "tri-tiered" wings being worn is that they seem to show up right around the  1940-1941 time period (give or take a few years), so its not surprising that they don't show up in the earlier AMCRAFT and Link catalog (Link seems to have stopped making insignia right around the end of WWI in any case).
