      Hello! Recently picked up this 1881 Mills belt, looking for some more info on it, and maybe its value. I presume the buckle to be to the NY National Guard, but is it blue for Navy? Thank You!

      That's is too cool and the "F" in both signatures leaves no doubt in my mind they are by the same hand.  Congratulations!   I would write down all the info including the address of the auctioneer and keep it with the wing.    Mark D

      Here's direct mention of Receiving Ship Tally usage from the USN Regs:   BuNav CL No. 49-25 published on 8 October 1925 inaugurated cap ribbons with the following designations for enlisted men attached to shore stations: a.       Ha! No I never did. I just kind of fumbled and stumbled my way along. And now at 67, I still have not figured it out. I too have a lifelong love of history, as most likely most of us here do. But never could figure out how I could make a good living off of it with the resources available to me.  As for archeology or paleontology, I could have really dug a career doing that.  mikie
