This letter is significant for Bowie knife fans as Schively is one of the early makers, and 1856 is very late for a new knife from one of the brothers, but it’s also possible that Dahlgren submitted a *bayonet* of Bowie design by Schively along with his prototype rifle. Very hard to tell from the wording. From the wording it also seems likely that no saber bayonet was planned by Dahlgren at the time. Mikie - ok on the restoring👍.   The seller said it was German made.   This scabbard is made of metal, with felt inside.   I'm not savvy on all of the terminology, but the slot where the barrel of the rifle goes in is 1" I.D.     I will check out the site.    BTW, one other thing that is peculiar to me. The handle is solid brass, but the part that goes across (with the bayonet slot) is metal. Most of the ones I have seen online are both brass.   Thanks again for all the help! Dom,   To be totally honest with you, I don't think I have ever encountered a Type 1 in anything other than a purple box from a veteran. I've never seen a Type 2 in anything other than a Type 2 short, titled case. I have encountered army pattern medals to marines in army cases.   My guess is that if a type 1 is in a type 2 box or vice-versa, it was probably done by a collector.   Dave S. has probably seen more in the hands of vets or their families, so perhaps he can chime in.   Allan

This is a type III infantry collar brass that looks like the die was made for the 1914-1924 bolt rifle insignia but was altered for use later by making the bolt section less distinct.   Also one of those type III disks with a hex nut holding the insignia to the disk.  

I have seen Officer grade uniforms worn by enlisted with no cuffs and a sewn duck that others "upgraded" at a later date, but those are the only photos I have seen of Officers with the duck. What do the regs say?
