There was crazy interest in souvenirs among those who served but not in combat. Between stealing within the postal system and selling/betting stuff on the shipride home, it's amazing any vet had anything left for their cigar box.

Nice helmet. I’m glad it got home safe. Dad mailed a ton of stuff home from the Pacific during the war. He said maybe 20% of it made it to his parent’s house.  mikie

I've seen many, uncommon but not rare.  Was late issue with tritium vials to provide enough light to read the scales at night.  Dunno if they still issue them but I would guess so.  Am sure we have a journeyman gunner on the site to give the real skinny!

I see the Space Medal of Honor, Navy Distinguished Service Medal, Director Flying Cross, unknown nasa ribbon,Navy presidential unit citation, Nasa Distinguished Service Medal, American Defense, American campaign  Pacific Campaign with 4 stars, Europe Cam,ww2 victory, ww2 occupation,national defense,Korea Service, United Nations, Philippine Defense, philippine liberation, Navy Distinguished marksmanship.    So no there are not two pacific campaign ribbons.    Is this ribbon bar supposed to represent someone?

Absolutely! In the photo posted before the knife, note you can see this knife and sheath being worn on the side/back of the rucksack. Condition is definitely rough, but it was a tool and it was certainly used in countries we weren’t supposed to be in.
