Well I think you misread when I said he would have gotten the American campaign medal as the American defense medal when I didn’t mention the American defense medal at all during my statement. Also the government awarded all world war 2 veterans with the American victory medal wether they left early or not. However, the U.S. government did make mistakes and often forgot to award veterans with this. Finally, it could be possible for a WWI U.S. army veteran to be in the reserves and be recalled to active duty after December 7th 1941, but was a rare occurrence. So yes you could be correct (except for how you accidentally mislabeled the American campaign medal as the American defense medal) but it would be a small chance to say the least. -

Overseas/Garrison Caps Came upon these while sorting items. They appear to be World War 1 era overseas/garrison caps. On line references indicate many styles and manufacturers of these caps during that timeframe. Cap 'A' has bullion officer's insignia but is not piped in the 'black and gold' usually seen on officer's caps. I found references to period branch colors of the era indicating 'crimson and yellow' as ordnance but I cannot tell the differences in red, crimson, or scarlet to state definitively what the coloration is. The other piping is a pale yellow (it is more distinct when held in hand). No maker marks nor names found. Cap "B' is of a different construction and features an interesting insignia attached. I did not find any information about the insignia yet. The cap also has some 'piping' under the sweat band in the interior as shown. No names nor maker's marks. It is possible this is not "US". Will post it on WMF for comments also. Thoughts, comments or suggested references are appreciated. Larry -

Not in the 1940 manual and I couldn't find a copy of the 1947. Here is what it states in the 1949 Marine Corps Manual: "Stars worn on the suspension ribbon or on the ribbon bar, of decorations and medals, shall be placed so that one ray of each star points down. The first star authorized to be worn on a ribbon shall be centered upon the ribbon. If more than one star is worn, they shall be placed in a horizontal line close to and symmetrically about the center of the ribbon." -

. School children today. I think maybe Johan, Solcarlus, earlymb will probably verify my statement here that every June school children are encouraged to visit the wartime cemeteries and place French and American flags at the base of every grave marker. Well today having a late morning coffee in Ste Mere Eglise a class of junior pupils and their teacher circled the square collecting dropped litter and they were happily laughing and engaged in doing so, learning civic pride at an early stage. Have you tried placing it on a mannequin head? -

Could have left the Army after WW1 and was recalled to active duty after Pearl Harbor. Hence no American Defense Ribbon. And if this uniform was worn like this prior to VE/J Day, no WW2 Victory Ribbon. Not saying this uniform is legit. Just saying what can be perceived as ribbon anomalies can frequently be explained. -

Any help would be appreciated. Appx 155 diameter. Super fine threads for whatever screwed into the top. Notice where the driving band sits. Shell is hollow. Almost like for smoke or gas. Thanks for looking! -
