My father was in the 509 in WW2. I cannot say for sure, but on all of the authentic WW2 509 patches I have seen the hands and feet of the stick figure touch the outer edge embroidery. This outer edge represents the door of the aircraft, so the soldier would be holding the door frame in preparation to jump. Of course, the 509th still exists, so it could be a more recent patch, or it could be a variation I have not run across. -

Yes, there are Pilot, Glider Pilot, Liaison Pilot, Service Pilot, Bombardier, Navigator, Observer, Aerial Gunner and Aircrew wings made this way, in both 3” and 2” sizes. There are also 1-1/2” wings that are stylistically the same but those are struck as single-piece wings. Some of those 1-1/2” wings are hallmarked by Dodge. -

To add to the topic- post WWII there is a "Crew Chief" as well as a bar with a propeller which I believe was also to denote crew chief for helicopters. Allan -
